Kent County Car Crash Due to Road Conditions Leaves Two Dead
At 10:30 on the morning of Sunday, November 10, 2024, there was a fatal, one-vehicle crash in Kent County, Michigan. A family was driving in their pick-up truck when the truck lost control, presumably due to the wet conditions on the road, and crashed into a nearby dirt embankment. The crash involved a father, an expecting mother, and their 17-month-old child. Both the pregnant mother and her 17-month-old child were killed in the crash after being ejected from the vehicle.
Conditions That Can Cause Single-Vehicle Accidents
Weather conditions often play a role in single-vehicle accidents. Other common types of conditions, besides bad weather, that can be a factor in single-vehicle accidents include:
-
Road maintenance and conditions: Poorly maintained roads or lack of proper snow removal can contribute to accidents and affect liability.
-
Driver behavior: Actions such as lane changes, failure to yield to other drivers, or disregarding traffic signals can indicate negligence in single-vehicle accidents.
-
Vehicle condition: Defective brakes, worn-out tires, or malfunctioning headlights can contribute to accidents and potentially shift liability to vehicle owners or manufacturers.
Car Accidents and Booster Seat Statistics
Car accidents are the leading cause of death for children ages 12 and under. A major contributor to this is the number of children not buckled in car seats correctly, if at all. Based on numbers from the National Safety Council and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):
-
Car seats reduce the risk of injury by 54% for young children and toddlers
-
Car seats reduce the risk of injury by 71% for infants
The risk of injury is far higher for unrestrained children. Using the correct child restraint system can make all the difference in avoiding severe injuries.
